Beginning a yearlong deployment as part of the NATO peacekeeping force, up to 6,000 troops from Fort Hood, Texas, are heading to Bosnia this fall.

Some 4,000 to 6,000 1st Cavalry soldiers will be sent to Bosnia to replace troops from the 1st Armored Division and the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood officials said Thursday. The deployment will include the 1st Cavalry Division headquarters and a brigade-size element, leaving more than 12,000 other 1st Cavalry troops in Texas.

While the 1st Cavalry itself will be in Bosnia for a year, the Pentagon has yet to determine the length of deployment for individual soldiers.
