Inmates huddled in their cells when a tornado hit the jail here Thursday, Sheriff Gayle Ray said Friday.

The twister shattered every window in the building and left debris all over the surrounding grounds and streets. But Ray said he didn't bother calling city crews to help with the cleanup because all the inmates quickly volunteered.

"We let them out and they pitched in and helped us do the job," he told Reuters. "And not a one of them made the slightest attempt to escape."
