A worker welds joints on the "scholarship level" of Rice Stadium Friday. The completion date for the $52.5 million project is Aug. 20, just in time for the University of Utah football team's 1998 season. The stadium will seat 46,500 people and play host to the 2002 Winter Games' opening and closing ceremonies. Funding will come from private donors, ticket sales and an $8 million user fee to be paid by the Salt Lake Organizing Committee. Layton Construction Co. project supervisor Herb Biesinger said construction is on track, although rain and snow during February, March and April have caused delays. "Football season is going to come. We've had no other option but to truck the mud out and bring dirt in," he said. Crews installed three sets of lights on the west side of the stadium Friday, the latest construction milestone in the arena's expansion. The lights are equipped to provide seven levels of illumination, including a very low level to accommodate cleaning the stadium.
