Although BYU claimed its highest finish ever in the NCAA gymnastics meet, the Cougars failed to qualify for Friday's three-team finals at Penn State.
The Cougars finished fifth in the six-team competition Thursday night with a 227.425 total, which topped their 1992 sixth-place finish. California finished first, followed by Iowa, Illinois and Oklahoma while Ohio State was sixth.Three BYU gymnasts who qualified for Saturday's individual-event finals include Fabricio Olsson on the floor, Cortney Bramwell on the rings and Andrew Pileggi on the parallel bars.
Travis Romagnoli became the first Illinois gymnast to win the NCAA all-around gymnastics title with a score of 58.225 Thursday night. Romagnoli's strongest events were the horizontal bars, in which his 9.875 was the top score, and the horizontal bars, in which he placed second with a 9.75.
Oleg Kosyak of California took second in the all-around with a 58.075, highlighted by a top finish on the vault, and Todd Strada of Iowa took third with a 57.725, which included a second-place finish on the pommel horse.
