The U.S. Department of Agriculture has fined a New Jersey company $50,000 for violating a federal law that regulates the care and treatment of laboratory animals. But in a settlement, the company, Huntingdon Life Sciences of East Millstone, N.J., agreed to pay the fine without admitting to the charges.

The settlement was the final chapter in a long battle by Huntingdon to defend itself against claims by an animal rights organization that it callously mistreated animals.
