The commander of Fleet Air and Maritime Air Forces in the Mediterranean, Rear Adm. John R. Ryan, will be the next superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy.

The appointment, which must be confirmed by the Senate, was announced Wednesday by Secretary of Defense William Cohen. It was reported in February by media citing military sources.Ryan, 52, also will be promoted to vice admiral. He will succeed Adm. Charles R. Larson, a four-star admiral who has worked to toughen standards after a series of scandals.
