A parenting support group has been organized in West Valley City and will hold weekly meetings.
"Communities Empowering Parents," which is funded through a state grant administered by the city's Neighborhood Services Office, will meet at 6 p.m. each Thursday in West Lake Junior High School, 3400 S. 3450 West. The two-hour sessions will be conducted by Project Reality, a youth and family mentoring program. There is no charge for the service.
Parents are invited to participate in the meetings with their teenagers, elementary school children and toddlers.
John Cottrell, a prevention specialist for Project Reality, said the support group will also have a strong educational component.
"It's important to provide support among family members, especially when topics arise such as substance abuse and gangs," he said. "Families need to have open communication about these issues, and all family members can learn to talk about them effectively."
Interested parents can contact Cottrell at 364-8080, ext. 227, for additional information.
