Catherine R. Knudsen, 71, passed away Saturday, April 11, 1998 at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City.
She was born October 20, 1926 in Pana, Illinois, the daughter of Ina Sitton and William Van Russell. She married William O. Knudsen in Springfield, Illinois on June 9, 1948.Catherine spent her early years, until eight years of age, in Nokomis, Ill. Her family moved to Springifeld where she completed high school and graduated from nurses training from Memorial Hospital of Springfield. She subsequently was employed at University of Illinois Hospital where she met her husband. They were married at St. John's Lutheran Church in Springfield and moved to Chicago where they resided until her husband finished his education. They then moved to Kanab, Utah where they lived until moving to Brigham City in 1958. Catherine enjoyed her last years between living in Brigham City in the summer and in Yuma, Arizona at her condominium in the winter months.
Catherine was an excellent nurse working at University Hospital Pediatric Department prior to starting her family. She resumed her nursing career after her children were grown working as a director of nurses at Cooley Hospital until it closed. She then worked as a phlebotomist in the Red Cross blood service.
During her life she was very active in her church, being a charter member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Brigham City. She served her church in many capacities including serving as president of the Church Council. She also was active in American Legion Auxiliary and helped to organize the Box Elder Republican Ladies.
She is survived by her husband William, Brigham City; four children, Mary Jo Gerber, Park City; Elizabeth (Peter) Baumgartner, Brigham City; William Russell (Jeanne) Knudsen, Cody, Wyoming; and Connie (Gregg) Schowengerdt, Salt Lake City; nine grandchildren; and one sister, Jo Ann Henigan, Woodland, California.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 14 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. No viewing will be held, but friends may call at the family home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 13. The family suggests donations to the Catherine Knudsen memorial fund at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery under the direction of Petersen Funeral Chapel.
