A one-hour orientation for prospective Hogle Zoo volunteers is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 18, in the zoo auditorium.

Volunteer opportunities will be explained. Individuals who are 18 years and older and interested in volunteering are invited to attend.Docents, or volunteer teachers, may have the opportunity to handle animals following a six-week training program. Volunteers staff the Discovery Center, assist with animal care and create an extensive summer class schedule and overnight "Zoosnoozes" for children.

They also participate in group tours, birthday parties and other on-grounds events, which include presentations about many of the zoo's 1,200 animals, conservation efforts and Hogle Zoo history.

Training for the zoo's volunteer program will begin Saturday, April 25, and will continue on Saturdays through May 30. Call the zoo at 582-1631, ext. 737, for more information.
