A woman burned in a vehicle fire late Monday night remained hospitalized in critical condition Friday at the University of Utah Burn Center.
Bonnie Hilarides, 46, of West Jordan, was traveling with a gas can in her truck on U-73 west of Lehi, said Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Mike Forshee. Hilarides told police she was smoking as she was driving and said an ash might have ignited the gas which burned her and her vehicle. The woman was found by a motorist after she walked more than a mile back to the main road. She suffered first- and second-degree burns over 40 percent of her body, Forshee said.
The motorist called for police assistance and met an ambulance with Hilarides at Eagle Pass near Eagle Mountain. She was taken to the American Fork Hospital and later transported to the burn center in Salt Lake City.
The damaged vehicle was located by sheriff's officers about 2 a.m.
