Let's say you were just elected mayor of Taylorsville.

What's the first thing you would do as mayor? Raise taxes? Throw a pizza party for city employees?Now you can take pen in hand and tell the world: Just enter the "If I Were Mayor . . . " essay contest.

The essay contest is being sponsored by the Taylorsville Arts Council in conjunction with the annual Taylorsville Dayzz celebration, scheduled for June 27.

Essays should range in length from 500 to 1,000 words and explain how you would handle the full-time job of leading this city of 60,000 people.

"I'm sure I'll read some of the essays," Mayor Janice Auger said. "Maybe I'll get some good ideas."

The contest is open to residents of all ages, and entries may be typewritten or sent by e-mail or mailed in on a 3.5-inch diskette in either IBM or Mac format.

All entries must be received by the May 15 deadline, and contestants should include their names, addresses and phone numbers.
