A man was seriously injured after being struck by a car Thursday night.

Darrell E. Guess, 39, Salt Lake City, stepped off a bus near 3600 S. 700 East about 9:15 p.m. and walked around in front of it to cross the street. As he stepped away from the bus, he was struck by a southbound car, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Jay Southam. The impact plunged the man through the air about 40 to 50 feet, Southam said. Paramedics landed a Life Flight helicopter in the middle of 700 East and took Guess to LDS Hospital with serious internal injuries. He was admitted to the intensive care unit and was listed in satisfactory condition Friday morning, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The driver of the car, 23-year-old Jude Crutchfield, Salt Lake City, was not cited, Southam said. Apparently, Guess had been drinking with a friend before boarding the bus, Southam said.
