Walter James Michelsen, Jr., M.D., died on Monday, March 6, 1998 in Sun City West, AZ, after a courageous battle against cancer, surrounded by his wife and children.
Walt was the eldest child of Walter James Michelsen, Sr. and Elaine Stevenson Michelsen.Walt was a graduate of the University of Utah in pre-med, then attended Columbia University in New York City on a rowing scholarship. He received his M.D. from Columbia University, was an Ensign in the US Navy, and completed his residency in surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York, before returning to Salt Lake City. He was on the surgical staff of LDS Hospital for nearly 30 years before retiring to AZ.
Walt leaves his loving wife, Nancy Michelsen; one daughter, Sara; three sons, James Thomas and Robert; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as many cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends in Salt Lake City and Sun City West, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Gerald Elbert Michelsen, and sister, Julia Elaine Michelsen Oberg.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, 3:30 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 South Highland Drive. Friends may call Friday 6-8 p.m. at Neil O'Donnell and Sons Mortuary, 372 East 100 South.
