It may have been simply an effort to "clean up" the language in the city code, but an ordinance passed recently also gives more power to its city administrator, complained one councilman.
The ordinance clarifies that city administrator Keith Morey has the power to hire and fire appointed officials without direction from the council. The words, "with the advice and consent and of the mayor and City Council" were removed from an administrative ordinance passed four months ago."I don't believe we should put all this power in one person," Councilman Bernell Evans said.
But that's the way the city has been run for at least the past three years, countered Councilwoman Pam Wilson. She said the new ordinance clarifies that the council is legislative and the administration is administrative. But Evans said the new ordinance strips authority from elected officials.
