NEW ASU COACH: Rob Evans is leaving Mississippi to coach Arizona State, The Associated Press learned. Arizona State scheduled a news conference for today to officially announce the hiring.
Evans, 51, will replace Don Newman, the interim coach who took over for Bill Frieder. Frieder resigned under pressure last September.Evans was 86-81 at Mississippi, but his last two teams were a combined 42-16 with consecutive SEC West titles and NCAA tournament berths.
IONA HIRES RULAND: Jeff Ruland, a former Iona and NBA player who spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach, was elevated to head coach. He replaces Tim Welsh, who left last week to coach Providence.
The Gaels are coming off a 27-6 season in which they won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title and appeared in their first NCAA tournament since 1985.
MCKIE TO STAY: BJ McKie, the Southeastern Conference's leading scorer, will return for his senior season at South Carolina rather than enter the NBA draft. He averaged 18.8 points last season.
