Three-month-old Plai Moradok Loke waves his trunk from under his mother in a village in the northeastern province of Surin in Thailand Saturday. The Thai government has built a stage in Surin and is sponsoring weekend elephant shows in an effort to prevent owners from taking their animals out of the province to big cities, where they can earn more money for performances. Elephants earn for their keepers about 100 baht ($2.50) per week from stage shows.
