FAST LANE MEET: Dixie's Cody Fonnesbeck was named the Most Valuable Performer Saturday at the Fast Lane/University of Utah track meet. Forty-nine high schools competed at East High.
Fonnesbeck earned victories in the 100- and 200-meter races. He also took sixth in the long jump while leading his 4x100-meter relay team to a second-place finish.
Five other athletes were two-time winners, including: Davis' Danny Elggren (100, 300 hurdles); Murray's Oliver Smith (long jump, high jump); Timpanogos' Bryan Lindsay (1600m, 3200m); Bear River's Holly Gibbons (100 hurdles, 100m) and Emery's Andrea Larsen (shot put, discus).
The top field event performers were Bountiful's Ryan Smith (208-2 in javelin) and Mountain View's Lindsay Steele (5A record in girls high jump, 5-8).
Fremont's Joel Atwater (800m victory) and Gibbons were named the top track performers.
DAVIS CUP: Richey Reneberg and Todd Martin beat Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin 7-6, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 on Sunday to give the United States a 2-1 lead over Russia in its first-round Davis Cup match in Stone Mountain, Ga.
In today's reverse singles, Andre Agassi faced Kafelnikov, and Jim Courier met Safin. On Saturday, Agassi won his 16th straight Davis Cup singles match with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 rout of Safin, tying the American record for consecutive victories.
FAMILY CIRCLE: At Hilton Head Island, S.C., South Africa's Amanda Coetzer beat Romania's Irina Spirlea 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday in the final of the Family Circle Championship. Coetzer earned $150,000.
UTAHN SECOND: Stephanie Belnap of Provo finished tied for second at the Southwestern Bell Classic Sunday in Richardson, Texas.
She and two others were one shot behind Suzy Green of Franklin Village, Mich., who won with a 1-under 71.
TEXAS 500: At Fort Worth, Texas, Mark Martin won the Texas 500 on Sunday, beating Jack Roush Racing teammate Chad Little by 0.573 seconds.
Martin, who earned $356,850 for his 24th Winston Cup victory, averaged 136.771 mph in his Ford in the race slowed by seven caution periods. He is fourth in the season standings, 57 behind Rusty Wallace, who finished 12th.
On Saturday, Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the Coca-Cola 300 for his first Busch Grand National victory.
GRAND PRIX OF LONG BEACH: Italy's Alex Zanardi, the defending CART champion, won the Grand Prix of Long Beach on Sunday, passing Bryan Herta with two laps left and holding off Scotland's Dario Franchitti.
PUCKETT IN ACCIDENT: Former Minnesota Twins star Kirby Puckett sustained cuts on his arm and head in a rollover Sunday in Mounds View, Minn.
FSU QB INJURED: Dan Kendra, Florida State's starting quarterback, might miss the 1998 season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in a scrimmage.
RAMS ACQUIRE BONO: The St. Louis Rams acquired backup quarterback Steve Bono from Green Bay on Sunday for a late-round pick in 1999. Mark Rypien, St. Louis' backup last season, recently signed with Atlanta.
