A jury has awarded $18 million to a man who was strapped to a bed for most of his three-year stay at a mental hospital following a motorcycle accident.
The Friday verdict is intended to cover medical care and compensation for pain and suffering for Aaron Wynn, now 30, who suffered brain damage and became violent after the 1986 accident.Wynn was committed in 1993 after charged with manslaughter in the death of an 85-year-old woman he had knocked down.
He was declared incompetent to stand trial and committed to state hospitals. At one institution he was kept in restraints for much of his three-year stay.
Wynn has since been transferred to a private institution.
