SWIMMING: Somewhat recovered from the virus that slowed him at the NCAA Championships, BYU senior Byron Shefchik placed second in the 200 breaststroke at the U.S. National Swimming Championships in Minneapolis.
Shefchik, who placed fifth in this event at last years U.S. Nationals, has been hampered in recent competiton by a viral infection. He placed fourth in the 200 breaststroke at the NCAA's last week, 13th in the 100 breaststroke, and 16th in the 200 individual medley.
ACADEMICS: Utah skier Marcus Leunig has been named to the College Sports Information Directors Association District VIII All-Academic team. Leunig, a sophomore with a 3.97 GPA in finance, is a native of Wollerau, Switzerland.
SOFTBALL: Freshman Kristin Arbogast pitched Utah to a doubleheader sweep over Tulsa, 6-1 and 7-0, on Friday night in Western Athletic Conference softball at Broken Arrow Field in Tulsa, Okla. Arbogast went the entire seven innings and struck out three in the opener. The Utes moved to 22-11, 9-3 WAC. Utah and Tulsa conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader today at 2 p.m.
SOFTBALL: Tammy Alcantar's fifth-inning single scored two runs to lift Utah State to a 2-1 victory against Sacramento State in the first game of a Big West double-header on Friday. Sacramento State posted a 9-2 victory in the nightcap. With the split Utah State is now 8-13 overall and 2-8 in Big West play. Sacramento State is now 17-16 overall and 7-9 in the league.
TENNIS: Matches at the Pepsi Wildcat Tennis Invitational were completed Friday without threat of rain.
In the morning's action, the University of Montana women's team shut out the Bengals of Idaho State 7-0, while the Idaho State men's team edged the Grizzlies 4-3. In the Weber State/Montana State matches, WSU (8-5) edged the Bobcats 5-4, taking wins at No. 2, 3 and 4 singles, as well as No. 2 and 3 doubles.
Montana State won the men's match against Weber State (6-13) 5-1, with Trevor Ferguson claiming the sole victory at No. 1 singles.
Both men's and women's matches of the Idaho State/Montana State match will start at 9 a.m. Saturday with the Weber State/Montana men's and women's matches following at noon.
SOFTBALL: Southern Utah and Valparaiso split a softball doubleheader Friday, with SUU parlaying seven hits and four Crusader errors into an 11-0 win in the opener before Valpo came back with a 14-hit attack to take a 9-3 decision in the nightcap.
Christy Burge had two triples and three RBI while Cami Niko added a double and scored three runs in the first game. Jennie Kerr (3-7) threw a three-hitter over five innings to pick up her third win of the season as the game was shortened by the 10-run mercy rule.
The two teams are scheduled to square off again today at 1:30 at Thunderbird Park.
UVSC BASEBALL: Utah Valley State College moved out to a two-game lead in the Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball standings after sweeping second-place Dixie College 3-2 and 3-1 Friday.
Knocking in a run in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings, UVSC's Shane Belliston tied a school record by extending his hitting streak to 23 games.
In the second game, Davis picked up his fifth save of the season while Brandan Unck earned the victory for UVSC.
UVSC improved to 11-1 in SWAC play and 23-9 overall. Dixie dropped to 10-4 and 27-10. The same two clubs pair off today in a 1 p.m. doubleheader in Orem.
