Summit County Democrats chose candidates for a seat in the state Legislature as well as on the County Commission at their party convention in Park City Thursday night.

Greg Miner, a Park City businessman, was selected to run on the Democratic ticket for the District 53 seat in the Utah House over Kim Passey of Woodland, a Salt Lake County Fire Department captain and the Draper fire marshal. Both candidates agreed to accept results of a straw poll at the Summit County convention, even though the district boundaries includes Rich and Morgan counties.

Summit County Democratic Party Chairwoman Carma Burns said Passey conceded after Miner received more than 55 percent in a straw poll taken among the more than 120 Democrats attending the convention.

Settling the race at the Summit County convention "saved a lot of time and energy, plus money," Burns said, resources the the party wants to direct toward defeating the incumbent, Rep. David Ure, R-Kamas.

Also Thursday, Democrats endorsed Summit County Historical Society Chairman Patrick Cone over Synderville Basin attorney Ruth Wagner for Seat B on the Summit County Commission. Cone earned more than 66.6 percent of the delegates' votes.

Cone will face the winner of the Summit County Republican race between incumbent Jim Soter and Merrill Duncan, a Synderville Basin resident who sits on the county library board.
