Melba Jean Nielsen Gurney, age 73 of Vernon, Utah, died April 2, 1998 at the Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, following a short illness.
She was born July 25, 1924 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Andrew Alma and Ivy Eleanora Olson Nielsen. Married Martin Dean Gurney, Nov. 6, 1946 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She was raised in Vernon, Utah and in her younger years worked at Deseret Chemical Co. She was a homemaker and celebrated with her husband their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997. She served in the LDS Church as a visiting teacher for many years, in the presidencies of the Relief Society and Primary, as a temple worker in the Jordan River Temple and as an extraction worker. She loved crocheting, quilting, writing poetry and short stories and she especially loved her family ranch and her grandchildren.
iSurvived by two sons and two daughters, Merrill (Connie) Gurney, Taylorsville; Reece (Robin) Gurney, Kaysville; Susan (Kent) Sagers and Karen (Mike) Tamllos, both of Vernon; 10 grandchildren; brother and sisters, Earl (Rosemary) Nielsen and Iva Ann (Doyle) Shields, both of American Fork; Aurelia Swenson, Tooele. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Eldon and Reed Nielsen.
Funeral, Monday, April 6, 1998 at 12 noon in the Vernon Ward Chapel, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery. Funeral Directors, Wing Mortuary, Lehi.
