Helen Nielsen Benson died March 25, 1998 from cancer.
She was born to Niels Nielsen and Mima Wilson Nielsen on June 1, 1914. She began her life as one of the oldest of 12 Nielsen children and from then on her life was never unfamiliar to hard work. But her trademark was her classy, crisp appearance and sweet, friendly personality. Helen was especially gifted at creating beautiful hand made articles and anyone who is privileged to have one of them has a keepsake made with love in every stitch. She married Alve Benson, February 1938 and had two children, Midge (Iccabazzi) and Kevin Jon. She was a liberated career woman before her time. She worked as a buyer for the Men's Furnishings Department at ZCMI in the 30's and 40's and later at Keith O'Brien in Sugarhouse. The last 20 years of her working life she was bookkeeper for Eastman Kodak and the buyout companies that followed and proudly balanced "a quarter of a million dollars to the penny, every month". She was a perfectionist.
A most sincere thanks to all her friends and family who have loved and supported her during her illness and before at her 80th birthday open house--a very special occasion of her life. To her special "girls" at the Midvale Mining Company, the downtown Tiffin Room, her friends at her bank and drug store, friends at the mall, her quilting group and the Benson Cousin's Club. Helen was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers serving as historian for several years. And thank you for a mosaic of love from: Vista Hospice Care, Dr. Kent DiFiore, Dr. J.P. Hughes, Dr. John R. Stewart and Diedre---caring new friends, to her neighbors who helped with her yard, the Tom Yates family, Jean Keller, Perena Iccabazzi, Sherry Clayton and Bill Galeazzi. And to her two wonderful grandchildren whose special love and attention filled her last months, days and hours with exceptional love.
She is lovingly survived by her daughter, Midge (Iccabazzi); grandchildren, Peter and Andreana, all Salt Lake City; her sister, May (Gerischer-age 94), Southern California; her brothers, Alan Wi (Peggy) and Weston W. (Jean), Everett, Washington; and some 40 nieces and nephews and numerous grandnieces and nephews; stepchildren, Don (JoAnn) Benson, Pleasant Grove; and Barbara (Alfred), Salt Lake City.
