Flames feeding on methane, propane and butane gases bellow from a blown-out oil well about five miles west of Lovington, N.M., off U.S. Highway 82. The well, owned by UMC Petroleum of Denver, blew out Friday, when the drill struck a high-pressure, natural-gas pocket at approximately 12,000 feet deep. The plume of gas ignited unexpectedly Thursday and continues to burn. Experts from a company in Houston, are on site and will be extinguishing the fire and capping the well.
