A woman who has been in a coma for the past six months shed a tear shortly after giving birth to a baby girl, Italian media reported on Saturday.

The 21-year-old mother, named as Lady Minguzzi, had a brain hemorrhage and fell into a deep coma weeks after she became pregnant last year.She later recovered slightly and managed to communicate with hospital staff using almost imperceptible eye movements.

On Thursday she gave birth seven weeks early to a healthy 5.4-pound girl. The baby's grandparents named her Shannon.

"We placed the baby's heart monitor next to her mother and asked if she could hear it," Marco Mattucci, the hospital's chief gynaecologist, was quoted as saying. "She closed her eyes, which, according to the sign language we've developed over the past few months, signifies a yes.
