Orem police are searching for a suspect in a hate-crime attack on a black man at a convenience store here Wednesday.

Police Lt. Bob Conner said a white man hurled racial slurs and began hitting a 23-year-old black man with a chain wrapped around his fist in the parking lot of a Maverick at 1200 N. State.A 19-year-old friend of the victim "tried to intervene and got whopped a few times," Conner said. Both suffered minor cuts and bruises in the 9:30 p.m. attack.

The suspect fled the scene in a blue Chevrolet Corsica. Witnesses, who did not get a license-plate number, said the man was about 5 feet 10 inches tall and accompanied by two females.

"We looked for him all last night and we are still looking," Conner said.
