Salt Lake City Fire Chief Thomas J. Tallon and Deputy Chief George A. Sumner have earned the equivalent of a master's degree in firefighting and fire science from the National Fire Academy.

The two were presented their diplomas Thursday morning by Salt Lake City Mayor Deedee Corradini.They are two of 130 firefighters nationwide to complete the program this year. Only 1,400 firefighters hold the advanced degree, Salt Lake City Fire Capt. Devin Villa said.

The topics studied in completion of the degree include executive development, strategic management of change and leadership. The program is accredited by the American Council of Education.
