State Rep. Dan Tuttle has dropped out of the race for the Senate seat vacated by Tooele's George Mantes, leaving Ron Allen as the sole Democratic candidate.

"It helps the Democratic Party," said Allen, a Tooele resident.Three Republicans also are running.

Tuttle, a Magna resident who has served in the House for 14 years, told the Salt Lake County clerk to scratch his name from the candidate list Friday.

"I've got some other commitments I've got to take care of," Tuttle said, "and they have another Democrat."

The retired Kennecott Copper pipe fitter cited personal reasons for his decision but declined to discuss them. Before running for the Senate, Tuttle had said he would not run for re-election to the House.

"I've had a good time," he said. It's been fun - as much as politics is."
