The first of 23 light-rail mass transit vehicles ordered by the Utah Transit Authority was on its way to Salt Lake County on Wednesday.

UTA officials said the first car, traveling slowly by truck from the Sacramento facility where it was produced, crossed the Utah state line before 9 a.m.It was expected to arrive Wednesday afternoon during the monthly UTA Board of Directors meeting. A press conference to introduce the car was scheduled for 4 p.m.

Cars will continue to arrive from the Siemens Transportation Co. plant at the rate of about two a month. They will be housed at the Lovendahl Center, the light-rail maintenance facility still under construction in Midvale. Testing of the cars will begin June 1.
