Roy W. and Elizabeth E. "Tibby" Simmons and their family have donated $4.1 million for expansion of the University of Utah's Pioneer Memorial Theatre facilities, it was announced Tuesday by Pioneer Theatre Company.

According to Chris Lino, managing director of PTC, the gift is in the form of common shares of Zions Bancorp. stock, to be distributed over the next three years."In recognition of the gift, the theater will be renamed the Roy W. and Elizabeth E. Simmons Pioneer Memorial Theatre," Lino said.

PTC Artistic Director Charles Morey said, "Their gift is the most significant philanthropic act in the life of this theater since PMT was built 35 years ago."

Master plans for the expansion project include a new scenery and costume construction shops, rehearsal hall and storage space to the east of the building, and creation of new administrative offices in the courtyard area on the south side of the theater.

Renovation of the downstairs Babcock Theatre and newly expanded offices for the U. theatre department will also be part of the project, tentatively scheduled to begin in the summer of 1999 and completed in early 2000.
