Democrats and Republicans throughout Utah will hold party caucuses Tuesday night.
The caucuses (the old mass meetings) are open to anyone. However, party officials hope that party loyalists and independents thinking about becoming active in party politics will attend, not those belonging to other parties who just want to create mischief. For a location of the party caucuses in Salt Lake, Davis, Utah, Tooele and Summit counties, see Pages B4 and B5 in Monday's Deseret News.
At party caucuses delegates to county and state conventions are picked, along with precinct party leaders. Republicans plan a straw poll at their caucuses concerning alternatives to the federal income tax system.
While Republicans and Democrats hold party caucuses Tuesday at 7 p.m., Libertarians are holding their party meetings Wednesday evening.
Most other minor parties are not holding party caucuses. Their candidate selection process begins at their county and/or state conventions held in April and May.
