Merlin George Ahlquist (Mer), quietly passed away Saturday morning, March 21, 1998 while his wife and son held his hand.
He was born May 2, 1915 in Garfield, Utah, to Alver Oscar Ahlquist and Kathryn Naughten, where he spent his early school years, graduating from Cyprus High School, then went on to the U of U where he majored in Chemistry and became an All Conference Basketball player. He retired from Kennecott Copper Company in 1977 after working as a Chemist for 42 years.He married Ann Kartchner on November 13, 1937 and together watched his children grow to try and emulate his exemplary life. They were sealed together with their family in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Ann preceded him in death on August 23, 1969. Married Alta Barker on January, 1975, who has been a loving companion. Her children loved him also.
He is survived by his wife, Alta; seven children, Merann Hegemann (Norm), Terry Ahlquist (Concha), Pam Jensen (Wally), Hall Barker (Garna), Brad Barker (Linda), Scott Barker, Marsha Greenfield (Kim); 27 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jack Ahlquist (Beth).
Funeral services will be held on Wed., March 25, at the Mount Oympus Sixth Ward, located at 4407 So. Fortuna Way (3700 East), at 1 p.m. One hour prior to the service, family and friends may gather together. Interment, Mountain View Memorial Estates. Goff Mortuary, funeral directors.
