Every year, an increasing number of women in Cache County report being raped.

But the director of a women's shelter says that's a good thing."There's just more people willing to come forward now," said Betsy Franchina, director of Citizens Against Physical and Sexual Abuse.

In 1997, the organization handled 56 reported rapes, up from 47 the year before, Franchina said.

Rape exam kits have already been used 10 times in three months, compared to five times in the prior 12 months. Rape kits are administered by nurses at the Cache Valley Medical Clinic and are used to collect evidence of the rape that may be on the victim's body.

She attributes the increasing number of reports to awareness campaigns.
