A record number of residential fires in the past two weeks has prompted a like number of responses from the Greater Salt Lake Area Chapter of the American Red Cross to help the victims.
Deborah Bayle, chapter president, said six fires in single-family homes and apartments March 1-9 resulted in the chapter assisting eight families and providing $9,000 for temporary housing, clothing, meals, groceries and household necessities, the first month's rent in re-establishing their homes, beds, bed linens and kitchenware.Bayle said because March is American Red Cross month, the fires provided a greater awareness of safety and the chapter's need community support to provide the items necessary to help people victimized by fires.
The Red Cross never charges for the assistance given and relies totally on contributions from the community. Donations can be submitted to P.O. Box 3836, Salt Lake City, UT 84110, or by calling 323-7003.
