Jerry Tarkanian arrived at Fresno State three seasons ago with a promise to turn the basketball team into a winner.
He made good on that vow, but along with that success has come trouble that threatens to undermine the Bulldogs' run to the NIT quarterfinals.A day after two players were arrested on robbery and assault charges, Fresno State president John Welty said Wednesday he will pull the school out of the NIT "if any player or coach further disgraces this university with objectionable behavior."
The arrests are merely the latest problems facing the Bulldogs.
Welty said his patience "is at an end" with drug and other legal problems that have resulted in six of the school's 10 scholarship players serving suspensions this season.
The school president said such incidents, as well as an ongoing grand jury investigation of alleged point-shaving last season, have badly damaged the university's image.
MICHIGAN TO PIRATE A COACH? Michigan has received permission from Seton Hall to talk to basketball coach Tommy Amaker about the Wolverines' coaching job.
Seton Hall athletic director Sue Regan said Wednesday in a statement that Michigan officials requested permission to talk to Amaker, and Seton Hall agreed.
"However, we are confident that the commitments made by Seton Hall and by Tommy Amaker are for the long term," she said.
Michigan athletic director Tom Goss has said he has five people in mind for the job. They include Brian Ellerbe, the Michigan assistant who took over as interim coach after Goss fired Steve Fisher last October.
COACH CLYDE CAN'T START YET: Clyde Drexler already has a problem with his new job as head coach at the University of Houston: He can't start yet.
Drexler, named Tuesday as coach of the Cougars, still has unfinished business with his current team, the Houston Rockets. His two assistants, Reid Gettys and George Walker, also have to wrap up their former jobs.
Gettys, a member of Houston's three straight trips to the Final Four in the 1980s, is leaving his job with a local law firm but has several cases to complete before he can take on the new challenge.
Walker, a four-year letterman from 1975-1979, needs to close out his junior college coaching job.
