Southern Union State College of Alabama center Kenny Gamble slammed home the winning basket with two seconds to go to send Ricks College to a 61-59 first-round defeat at the NJCAA Basketball Tournament finals Tuesday.
Ricks trailed most of the game, battling one of their worst shooting performances of the season. In the first half, the Vikings hit only 29 percent of their shots, and that was after warming up near the end of the first twenty minutes.Southern wasn't much better at 35 percent, with the exception of Gamble who hit 6 of 13 first half shots and ended the game with 28 points.
As it turns out, Gamble's strong inside game was a surprise to Ricks, who had prepared for a three-point onslaught from Bison guards Chris Weakly and Desmond McCullough. Southern hit only four 3-pointers in the game.
