A doctor can tell you what immunizations and other precautions are needed for your trip, but do your own homework, too, so you're sure you get the medical protection you need.

Some doctors' offices can provide brochures on travelers' health, and the federal Centers for Disease Control publishes extensive information on the vaccines recommended (or occasionally required) for travel to various countries plus health tips for travelers. The CDC information is on the Internet at: (http://www.cdc.gov/travel/).Or phone the CDC's International Travelers' Hotline, 404-332-4559 to get recorded travel-health information or have it faxed.

Another excellent resource is the book "Travelers' Health: How to Stay Healthy All Over the World" (by Richard Dawood, Random House, $18).
