One man was shot to death and another critically wounded early Tuesday in an empty lot in the Swede Town area of Salt Lake City.
The dead man, a Hispanic in his mid-20s, was found lying beside a car at 800 W. Everett Ave. (1450 North). He had been shot in the head and died at the scene. The injured man, also a Hispanic in his mid-30s, was found lying some distance from the car with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso and legs. He was taken to LDS Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Tuesday.
"It appeared he may have been trying to run away when he was shot," said Salt Lake Police Lt. Phil Kirk.
Police were called to the area just before 1 a.m., when people in the mostly industrial neighborhood reported hearing gunfire. Witnesses said they saw a dark sedan with two males leave west on Everett immediately after the shooting.
No weapons were found at the scene, and investigators were not sure if the car in the vacant field belonged to the victims, Kirk said. Also, detectives were not speculating about a possible motive.
At daylight, detectives had the field cordoned off and were searching for possible evidence. The body of the dead man was taken to the Medical Examiner's Office. Neither of the victims was identified.
Kirk said investigators were checking to see if either man had ever had any contact with police.
