Elsie Torkelson Young Hummel, our loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away at home surrounded by family and friends on Saturday, March 14, 1998.

Born April 22, 1905, to Jens Marineus Torkelson and Elsie Sophia Johnson, she was the youngest of five children. Married George Leonard Young on February 23, 1923, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were parents to two daughters, Jacqueline Elsie and Mary Patricia. George preceded her in death on November 13, 1957. Elsie later married Carroll B. Hummel in 1966.Elsie was an active member of the LDS Church and served in many capacities. She worked in her early years for Mountain Bell, then Geneva Stell, and enjoyed many years as a receptionist for Dr. Robert G. Evans.

She was a woman of many talents and interests. She was an accomplished seamstress, sewing for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Other handicrafts included crocheting, knitting and ceramics.

Elsie always had a desire to learn and was an avid reader with a keen mind. She educated herself through good books. Other hobbies included golfing and bowling.

She will be remembered by her family as an excellent cook and a gracious hostess. The greatest joy she experienced was in serving her family.

She is survived by her husband, Carroll B. Hummel; two daughters, Jacqueline (W. Mack) Lawrence, Mary Patricia VanWagenen; six grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; also three stepchildren, Dr. Craig B. Hummel, Gail Wilson, and Lynn Dykman (deceased); seven step grandchildren and 14 step great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at 12 noon in the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 3401 So. Highland Drive, where friends may call Tuesday, 10:45-11:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery.
