An man charged in a car theft says he wants a woman who left her baby alone in a running car in November to be "smarter than that."
The man, 23, North Redwood, told police he did not realize a baby was in the back seat when he took a car left idling in front of an apartment, 1265 N. Redwood Road, Nov. 1, according to criminal charges filed in 3rd District Court Wednesday.A valleywide police search began after Michelle Klein, 20, told police someone had stolen her car with her 1-year-old daughter, Alexis, inside.
But Klein spotted her car an hour later in the back parking lot of her apartment complex, the charges state. The baby was still in her car seat and unharmed.
Fingerprints left on the car led to the man, who was arrested March 6 at home at the nearby Greenpointe Apartments, 1189 N. Redwood Road, the charges state. The man, who had four active warrants, identified himself with a false name before confessing.
The man has been charged with unlawful control over a motor vehicle, a class A misdemeanor, and giving a false identity to a peace officer, a class C misdemeanor. He is being held at the Salt Lake County Jail in lieu of $2,500 bail.
