Some Air Force and Navy personnel in the Persian Gulf have received their first vaccinations against anthrax, a Pentagon spokesman says.

"We anticipate that the first round of shots will be completed by the end of this month," Kenneth Bacon told reporters after reporting that the first round was administered on Tuesday.Service members in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain were the first to get the inoculations. Sailors on board ships will start their vaccinations on March 15, and troops in Kuwait will begin their vaccinations the same day, Bacon added.

Defense Secretary William Cohen announced last week that U.S. forces in the gulf region were being vaccinated first as a "prudent action" to protect them against a possible biological weapons attack by Iraq.
