Two moderate earthquakes struck this remote town in Southern California on Thursday, seismologists said. There were no reports of damage or injuries.

A 5.3-magnitude tremor hit at 9:47 p.m., followed by a 4.1-magnitude aftershock four minutes later, said Egill Hauksson, a seismologist with the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. They were centered 17 miles east of Little Lake, a sparsely populated town along U.S. Highway 395 near the China Lake Naval Weapons Center.

The quakes were felt by residents as far away as Fresno, about 70 miles to the northwest.
