American Skiing Co., which owns The Canyons ski resort and other resorts in New England, Colorado and California, turned a profit in its second quarter as a public company.
The Newry-based ski company finished its quarter ending Jan. 25 with earnings of $1.56 million. And it would have been higher if not for a one-time charge of $5.1 million related to the retirement of long-term debt, said Suzanne Parry, a spokeswoman for the company.
"We've had good growth as far as skier visits. We're growing the sport," said Parry, who noted that skier visits were 10.9 percent higher than the same period last year.
The profit comes after American Skiing lost $22.9 million in its first quarter ending Oct. 26.
