Paramedics working Saturday morning arrived just a tad too late.

They missed the actual birth of a baby girl - who was born onto the cement of a carport of a home in northeast Orem. But they arrived in time to gather up the young mother, the baby, cut the cord and get everybody safely to a hospital.

Orem Fire Department spokesman Dave Eckersly said the 19-year-old mother was getting into her grandparents' car at 4:45 a.m. Feb. 28, when the woman's labor pains suddenly became a good deal more intense.

The baby was born in 10 degree weather in the carport.

Paramedics Russell Young, Jeff Whitlock, Brent Shynoweth and Kevin Kemp attended to the birth shortly after.

Both the baby and the mother have since been released from the hospital.
