LeRay Sant Howell, age 87, passed away at home March 1, 1998 of natural causes.
Born September 14, 1910 in Clifton, ID, third son of E. Vernon and Edith May Sant Howell. Married Mary Perry on July 23, 1935 in the Logan LDS Temple. Graduated from Utah State University at Logan, UT in 1934. He taught at the LDS Business College in SLC from 1936 to 1942. He became the Utah State Merit System Director of the Utah State Civil Service from 1937 to 1976.He was a member of the SLC Lions Club from 1958 to 1963. He served in numerous LDS Church positions in the Ensign and Emigration Stakes, in a Bishopric, as a High Counselor, and in two Stake Presidencies. He and his wife served a mission at the L. A. Temple Visitor's Center.
He was one of the first Eagle Scouts in the State of Idaho in 1926 and served as a scoutmaster. He enjoyed fishing, photography and later in life took up painting.
Survived by his wife; four sons and four daughters, Perry Lee (Mary Eardley) Howell, Simi Valley, CA; Ronald Stuart (Phyllis Sue Roth) Howell; Rex (Jean Hinckley) Howell, SLC, UT; Lane Steven (Carolyn Annette Creek) Howell, Orlando, FL; Mrs. Gary D. (Reta) Allen, McCall, ID; Mrs. Gaylin W. (Colleen) Poulson, Highland Ranch, CO; Mrs. Kenneth Lynne (Mary Lou) Frank and Mrs. Stephen Joseph (Judy) Hatch of Salt Lake City, UT. There are fifty-four grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Arthur and Ferne Sant Howell and one son, Jack Kenneth (Ginger Dennett) Howell.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 6, 1998 at 12 noon at the Emigration 21st Ward Chapel, 2nd Avenue and K Street. Friends may call at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. and at the ward Friday one hour prior to services. Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery.
