First National Bank in Evanston, Wyo., has been hit by hundreds of fraudulent debit-card purchases in the Far East.

Bank officials discovered Feb. 23 that hundreds of electronic transactions had poured in to the bank's computers during the previous weekend for purchases at clothing stores and electronics shops in Australia and Asia.Bank officials would not disclose how much money was involved.

The crooks apparently were using about 200 counterfeit debit cards encoded with account numbers from the Wyoming bank. The television station said the crooks may have tested random numbers until they matched up with legitimate numbers at banks.

The bank alerted its customers and canceled their debit cards.

Bank President Michael Sappala said customers will not lose any money.
