An early morning delivery truck explosion resulted in the destruction of about $250,000 worth of camera and film supplies Monday.

The Luigi Film Supply truck, owned by Silver State Supplies Company, 1010 W. 2600 South, was northbound on 900 West near 2600 South when chemicals inside exploded about 5:30 a.m., said South Salt Lake police Sgt. Beau Babka.Fire crews responded a few minutes later and found flames emerging from the enclosed storage area of the truck, which also served as a mobile film-developing lab, Babka said. The entire roof of the enclosed area had blown off during the explosion.

Firefighters and HazMat crews doused the flames, but several small explosions kept feeding the fire for an hour, Babka said. There had been small propane and nitrogen tanks stored in the lab.

A preliminary investigation has revealed there may have been a leak in one propane or nitrogen tank, which caused the initial explosion, Babka said.

Two men inside the truck, the driver and a passenger, were not injured during the explosion, and no other vehicles were damaged, Babka said. The road reopened to traffic at about 7:15 a.m.
