Actor Mike Farrell, an anti-death penalty activist, has been appointed to the California commission that reviews judges' conduct.

Farrell, who played Army surgeon B.J. Hunnicut on "M-A-S-H," was named to the Commission on Judicial Performance.Farrell said he didn't know why he was chosen but was flattered.

"I scrambled to find out what it did," Farrell said. "It is an interesting way to serve the community. I am fascinated with the way the system works."

He is going through orientation and is scheduled to attend his first meeting this month. Farrell is president of Death Penalty Focus of California, a group that opposes the death penalty, and co-chairman of the California Committee of Human Rights Watch.
