A large section of the Oquirrh Mountains above Copperton has been rezoned to allow BP Minerals to strip-mine for gold.
Salt Lake County commissioners approved the zone change unanimously Wednesday after company officials said the project will add 200 permanent jobs and produce 70,000 ounces of gold annually during the mine's eight-year life. There was no opposition.
Company officials said the project probably will not begin until June or July 1989. State and county health officials must approve the project before work can begin. State officials earlier said the site is not ideal.
