Rocking on

The auction price was $28,250, and in return the unidentified buyer acquired the unpublished lyrics of a song by the rock singer and guitar virtuoso Jimi Hendrix, who died of a drug overdose in 1970. The three-page song was written by Hendrix on United Airlines note paper during a flight to Los Angeles that he took in 1969.

The Hendrix lyrics were put up for bidding at a two-day sale of rock 'n' roll memorabilia at Bonham's, an auction house in west London.

Fin de siecle

A curly red wig and a brassiere resembling a fish adorned Kevin Kline when he turned up at Harvard University to accept the Man of the Year award from the Hasty Pudding Club.

Members of the undergraduate drama group, recalling a Kline feat in the 1988 film "A Fish Called Wanda," wheeled out a fish tank and invited the actor to swallow an inhabitant. He declined and fed the fish.

Accepting his award, a shiny pudding pot, in recognition of his accomplishments in film and theater, he said, "I'm truly honored and touched in ways too indescribable to tell you."

Last week, Sigourney Weaver was honored as Hasty Pudding's Woman of the Year.

Virtue's reward

A previously unknown work by Peter Paul Rubens has come to light. It was snapped up by an antiques dealer from Amsterdam at an obscure auction in Paris.

The small, delicately colored oil sketch, depicting Honor and Virtue, was a study for a major painting commissioned in 1629 and now in the private collection of the Prince of Liechtenstein.

The panel will be offered for sale next month at the European Fine Art Fair in Maastricht, the Netherlands. Lilian is asking $412,000.
