Sheila Hutchinson scored a game-high 21 points and No. 1-ranked Union used a huge second quarter effort to defeat Ogden 52-43 in the first round of the 3A girls state tournament Friday.

Bev Richins added 11 points and Sarah Colton 10 more for the Cougars (20-1), who put together a 23-1 showing in the second quarter to blow open what had been a one-point game.The win advances Union into a quarterfinal meeting with Emery next Thursday when the tournament resumes at the Dee Events Center in Ogden.

In other first round games Friday:

LEHI 61, BEAR RIVER 49: The Pioneers pulled off the biggest upset of the day by knocking off the third-ranked Bears on their own home court.

PINE VIEW 63, RICHFIELD 45: Krystal Esplin banged home 20 points and the Panthers made an 18-point lead stand up in the second half for a victory over the Wildcats.

EMERY 67, HURRICANE 46: Adrianne Bradley continued her recent streak of strong performances by tallying 32 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots in the Spartans' victory over the Tigers. Emery outscored Hurricane 43-22 in the middle quarters.

NORTH SANPETE 66, CEDAR CITY 45: The Hawks overcame a sluggish start with a 20-4 second quarter that put them ahead for good in a win over the Lady Reds. Jenny Aagard racked up 25 points and Emily Jacobson added 17 more for No. Sanpete.

MORGAN 55, UINTAH 38: Paige Hansen and Steph Kolan each scored 15 points for the Trojans, who took a first quarter lead and made it stand in a win over the Utes.

WASATCH 54, TOOELE 45: The Wasps took an early 13-point lead and coasted to a win over the Buffaloes as Tasha Widdison tossed in a game-high 20 points.

SNOW CANYON 62, CARBON 36: The second-ranked Warriors used a stifling defense to hold the Dinos scoreless in the first quarter en route to a big victory. Dani Shaheen had 19 points and Jana Bundy added 18 for Snow Canyon, which led 19-0 after the first quarter.
